Second, Jet Li came back to the screen after about six years away. His martial arts epic Blades of the Guardians opened in February 2026 and reached digital platforms in June.
Add viral rumors and a 2017 awards speech that mentioned martial arts, and the two names started showing up together online.

Red Carpet and Public Appearances of Meryl Streep and Jet Li
Streep is a red carpet regular. The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiere took place at Lincoln Center on April 20, 2026. Her Cannes honor in 2024 and her awards season speeches are always widely covered.
Jet Li keeps a lower profile. He appears mostly for film promotion, charity work, and short film projects. In early 2026 he personally denied online health rumors, which shows how quickly false stories spread about him.
- Streep: premieres, festivals, awards shows
- Li: film launches, charity events, rare interviews
What Meryl Streep and Jet Li Mean to Cinema
Streep raised the bar for screen acting. She proved that women over 40 can lead major films and open big at the box office. Her success with Mamma Mia! and The Devil Wears Prada showed her comedy skills too.
Li carried Chinese martial arts to global audiences. He usually played humble, honest heroes, which gave his films a calm and dignified tone. He also helped bridge Hong Kong cinema and Hollywood after the path opened by Bruce Lee.
The shared thread is discipline. Both spent decades refining a craft that few can copy.
Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes: Record and Controversy
Streep is the most decorated performer in Golden Globe history.
- 33 nominations, the most of any actor
- 8 wins, also a record
- Passed Jack Lemmon’s nomination record in 2009
- Received the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2017
She could earn a 34th nomination for the sequel, but nominations have not been announced yet.
The controversy came from her January 2017 speech. She defended Hollywood’s diverse voices and criticized then President elect Donald Trump. She also said that without those voices, people would be left with only football and mixed martial arts, which she said are not the arts.
Critics argued the line overlooked Asian action stars. Fighters pushed back, and a martial arts themed event named Jet Li among the action icons it honored. The remark was never aimed at Li or any actor, but it fed the online link between the two names.
Why Do Meryl Streep and Jet Li Rumors Keep Spreading?
Several things keep the stories alive:
- Fake social media posts that use edited images
- Clickbait headlines that pair two famous names
- False casting claims, including the Wicked story
- The 2017 speech, which linked Streep to martial arts talk
- Search overlap, since both names trend at the same time
The Wicked confusion may come from Michelle Yeoh, another martial arts star, who plays Madame Morrible in that film. Neither Streep nor Li is in it.
How to check a claim: look at the official cast and credit list of the film. If both names are not listed, the story is false.
Are Meryl Streep and Jet Li Friends?
There is no public evidence of a friendship. I found no verified interview where one talks about the other, and no report of them appearing together at an event.
They may respect each other’s work, as most senior actors do. But respect is not a documented friendship, so treat any “close bond” story with caution.
Could Meryl Streep and Jet Li Have Made a Film Together?
In theory, yes. Hollywood mixes talent from different worlds all the time. Li has already worked with Western stars like Jason Statham, and Streep often joins large ensemble casts.
A drama with a martial arts family at its center could suit both. But this is only a fun thought. No such project has been announced, and both are busy with their own work.
